Thailand fall to China 2-3 in Asian Games semifinal, face South Korea for bronze today

Thailand's women's volleyball team lost to China 2-3 in sets in the semifinal of the 2026 Asian Games women's volleyball tournament, played at Park Arena Komaki in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on Monday, September 21. The result ends Thailand's hopes of a gold medal, but they still have a shot at bronze when they face South Korea today (September 22) at 2pm Thailand time, at the same venue.

A five-set thriller, decided in the final set

Thailand opened strongly, closing out the first set 25-23 after rallying late, briefly raising hopes of a run to the final. But China — ranked 7th in the world to Thailand's 13th — took control over the next two sets with heavy attacking and tight blocking, winning 25-21 and 25-11 to lead 2-1.

Thailand refused to fold, fighting all the way to deuce in the fourth set before closing it out 28-26 to force a decider. But in the fifth set China pulled away early, building a comfortable lead and closing the match 15-6 to win 3-2 overall. China advance to the final to face host Japan, who beat South Korea 3-0 in the tournament's other semifinal.

A rematch of the final that just made history

The match carried extra weight: it was the first meeting between Thailand and China since Thailand's historic 3-2 win over China in the final of the 2026 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship in Tianjin late last month — a result that delivered Thailand's fourth continental title and, more importantly, their first-ever qualification for the Olympic Games, at Los Angeles 2028, after decades chasing the dream.

The Asian Games and the Asian Championship are entirely separate competitions — the former a quadrennial multi-sport event, the latter a dedicated continental volleyball tournament — but this result shows just how closely matched the two teams remain, with China getting their revenge on the Asian Games court. Thailand had reached the semifinal with a perfect record in Pool C, sweeping past Mongolia and Chinese Taipei, before running into their toughest test of the tournament in China.

Kokram and Nuekchaeng lead with 16 points each; coach praises "a high-quality match"

China's Wu Mengjie top-scored with 29 points, proving decisive in the closing sets. For Thailand, outside hitter Pimpichaya "Beem" Kokram — who won the German Bundesliga title with SSC Palmberg Schwerin this year — and Thatdao "Nan" Nuekchaeng each scored 16 points, with Sasipaporn "Omsin" Janthawisut adding 15. Captain and setter Pornpun "Chompoo" Koetprach ran the offense, alongside Kaewkanya "Tip" Kamulatala and Chatchanok "Boom Bim" Moksri in the starting six, under head coach Kiattipong "Aot" Ratchatagriengai.

After the match, Coach Aot called it "a high-quality match" in which his players "competed fully" against China across all five sets, and said he still hoped the team could bring home the bronze medal. That matched what played out on court — Thailand never stopped fighting, pushing every lost set to the wire.

In the tournament's other semifinal, South Korea lost to host Japan 0-3 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16), sending them into the bronze medal match against Thailand today at the same venue, starting at 2pm Thailand time. The match is broadcast live on PPTV HD 36 and the AIS PLAY app; China play Japan for gold later the same evening.

The recent head-to-head record favors Thailand: across their last seven meetings in various tournaments, Thailand have beaten South Korea six times, including a 3-0 win in the semifinal of the same Asian Championship on August 27 — the same tournament in which Thailand went on to beat China in the final. If that pattern holds, Thailand have a real chance of ending this tournament with a medal of their own.

The women's volleyball tournament at the 20th Asian Games, held in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, features 14 nations competing from September 16 to October 3, 2026. Thailand were drawn in Pool C alongside Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, and advanced with a perfect record. Whatever happens in today's bronze medal match, an Asian Games medal would be a bonus on top of the team's bigger prize — Thailand have already secured their place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics through their Asian Championship win in late August, the biggest goal for the program in years.
