Halfway through 2026, the picture for Thai tourism is brightening — Chinese tourists have reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the Thai market, with over 2.3 million arrivals so far, up 18.4% year on year. Their return has helped push foreign tourism revenue past 700 billion baht since the start of the year, even as the global economy and oil prices keep up the pressure.

China is back on top

According to Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports, between 1 January and 31 May 2026 China was the largest source market with 2,318,312 visitors, up 18.4% on the same period last year. It was followed by Malaysia (1,737,938), India (1,056,729), Russia (946,732) and South Korea (539,848).

More telling than the numbers is the shift in how Chinese tourists travel. Where large group tours once dominated, today's visitors increasingly come as families and small groups — and many no longer see Thailand as merely a holiday destination, but as a "second home."

"Chinese tourists now travel with their families, reflecting that Thailand is becoming a 'temporary living space' for China's middle class," noted an analysis of the new generation of Chinese travellers by National Geographic Thailand.

The rebound is supported by cultural proximity, familiar food and language, and the expansion of China's middle class to more than 400 million people.

Tourism revenue stays strong

Although total foreign arrivals over the first five months (14,032,649) were down slightly, by 2.3%, the money visitors spent kept growing — generating roughly 679,274 million baht. By 7 June 2026, the cumulative count had climbed to over 14.5 million arrivals, with revenue reaching 701,358 million baht.

In other words, tourists are coming in slightly smaller numbers but spending more — exactly the direction Thailand has been steering toward, prioritising quality over quantity to lift revenue per visitor rather than chasing headcount alone.

Why it matters for Thais

Tourism is one of the main engines of Thailand's economy, touching everyone from hotels, restaurants, guides and drivers to local shops, farmers and communities that sell to visitors. When China — the single largest market — recovers, that means money and jobs flowing back to small operators across the country.

This positive trend mirrors Thailand's improving standing on the world stage, much like the way Thailand ranked among the world's better healthcare systems — both stories help build the confidence of foreign tourists and investors alike.

Challenges to watch

Not every market is glowing. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) acknowledges continued pressure from unrest in the Middle East, which has pushed up oil prices and weighed on the global economy. Some markets contracted as a result — the Middle East down 24.9%, ASEAN down 14% and South Korea down 19% (over the first five months of 2026).

Even so, TAT is sticking to its full-year 2026 targets of 33 million foreign tourists and 1.55 trillion baht in revenue, rising to 2.65 trillion baht in combined revenue once the domestic market is counted — split between 21 million short-haul and 10 million long-haul visitors.

Key facts (1 Jan – 7 Jun 2026):

  • Cumulative foreign arrivals: over 14.5 million · revenue 701,358 million baht
  • No. 1 market: China, over 2.3 million (+18.4%)
  • Full-year targets: 33 million arrivals · 1.55 trillion baht foreign revenue · 2.65 trillion baht combined

The second half of 2026 will decide whether Thailand hits its targets — but the return of Chinese tourists, its largest and highest-spending market, is a powerful tailwind that keeps the country's tourism sector looking to the future with optimism.
