Most Bangkokers drive through Phetchaburi on the way south and forget it is a destination: a hilltop palace you can climb in half an hour, a free cave of stalactites in the middle of town, a quieter beach than Cha-am, and food that UNESCO recognised. This guide sorts it into a realistic 2-day, 1-night trip.

⚠️ A note on the numbers: fees and hours come from KTC, Thai Post and travel sites listed at the end. Some pages are years old (the newest we found was updated in early 2026), and we found no verifiable official prices for hotels or ground transport, so we did not invent any. Check on site or with TAT Phetchaburi before you go.

Best time to go

We found no official seasonal data for Phetchaburi, so this is general reasoning: the old town and the Khao Wang climb are in full sun, so the cooler end of the year is more comfortable. KTC's older article says the Khao Wang annual fair is held in early February — confirm the new dates. For long weekends, see long weekends 2027 and the calendar at /holidays.

In town: Khao Wang, Tham Khao Luang, Wat Mahathat

Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang) is a historical park at 97 Khiri Rathaya Road, open daily 08:30-16:30; Thai adults 80 baht, Thai children 15, foreign adults 230 (KTC). It is a summer palace from the reign of King Rama IV with temples, royal halls and neoclassical buildings. Walk up or take the electric tram (an older KTC article lists about 20 baht — verify).

Tham Khao Luang is free, open 09:00-16:00 Monday-Friday and 09:00-17:00 on weekends — a limestone cave where daylight reaches the formations. Go around midday, not near closing.

Wat Mahathat Worawihan (3/1 Pho Kan Rong Road) is free, a royal monastery with white prangs in the old town. We found no fixed opening hours; go in the morning.

Ramrajniwet Palace (Ban Puen Palace) is a European-style palace from the reign of King Rama V, built as a rainy-season residence (KTC). Our sources give no hours or fees, so check before visiting.

The coast: Jao Samran and around

Jao Samran is a pine-lined beach with cafés and restaurants, and quieter than Cha-am (Thai Post). Stay one night for the sunset and a seafood dinner.

  • Models Beach — beanbags by the sea; Mon-Fri 09:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-22:00
  • Chanchao Cafe & Restaurant — a giant moon sculpture by the sea; daily 10:30-21:00
  • Ake Fresh Seafood — seaside tables, 10:00-21:00, about 200 baht a dish (KTC)
  • Hua Tan beach — about 3 km from Jao Samran, a private beach, 20 baht
  • Leaning poles at Tanod Noi — between Jao Samran and Cha-am; best at sunrise

Nature and family stops

Zucata Sheep Farm (Phetkasem Road, Cha-am) is open 09:00-18:00: Thai adult 50 baht, child 30; foreign adult 150, child 110. Bang Kaeo viewpoint is free, and at the right tide a small island-like formation appears. Khao Ibid is nicknamed the "Switzerland of Phetchaburi" (river, pines, limestone).

Kaeng Krachan National Park is described by Thai Post as the country's largest, with intact forest, birdwatching and sea-of-mist views. ⚠️ We found no current fee or opening status (some areas have been closed before), so treat it as a separate trip and call ahead.

What to eat

Phetchaburi was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021, known for three flavours: salt from Ban Laem, palm sugar and lime. Dishes the sources highlight: gaeng khua hua tan, khao chae, khanom chin tod man, kuay tiao nam daeng, plus khanom mor gaeng and khanom sali for dessert. KTC also suggests a café inside a 100-year-old wooden house.

Two-day plan

MiddayLocal lunch, then Tham Khao LuangZucata farm or Hua Tan beach

Extend south with the Hua Hin guide, or head north for cooler weather: cool-season trips and Lampang.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Climbing Khao Wang at noon — arrive before late morning or take the tram.
  • Visiting the cave near closing — less light, less time.
  • Trusting old prices — re-check fees on site.
  • Squeezing Kaeng Krachan into 2 days — it deserves its own trip, and status must be checked.
  • Arriving on a weekend without a booking — beachfront rooms are limited (general observation, not an official figure).
  • Dressing casually at temples and palaces — dress modestly.

Verdict

Phetchaburi is worth it for a short trip that mixes history, food and sea without a long drive, and many stops are free. We rate it 4 out of 5: points off because some official details are dated and Kaeng Krachan needs a separate plan. With two days, follow the plan above.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Phetchaburi?
Two days and one night: old town, Khao Wang, Wat Mahathat and Tham Khao Luang on day one; Jao Samran beach and seaside food on day two. Add Kaeng Krachan or Cha-am as an optional third day.
What does Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang) cost and when is it open?
According to KTC: 80 baht for Thai adults, 15 baht for Thai children, 230 baht for foreign adults, open daily 08:30-16:30. You can walk up or take the electric tram. Re-check prices on site.
Is Tham Khao Luang free?
Yes, per the sources found. Open 09:00-16:00 Monday-Friday and 09:00-17:00 on weekends. Daytime visits are best because sunlight enters the cave.
Can I go to Phetchaburi by train?
Yes. Bookaway lists an average of about 2h42 to 3h07 from Bangkok, and a Wongnai trip report describes a train day trip from Thonburi station for about 360 baht in total. Fares and timetables change, so check with SRT.
Should I add Kaeng Krachan?
Not for a short trip. It is Thailand's largest national park, good for birdwatching and sea-of-mist views, but we found no current fee or opening status — check with the park first.
