Every year-end the same question lands in the office group chat: "When are the long weekends next year?" And it usually ends with someone scrolling a calendar by eye and guessing. There is simple arithmetic behind it: a holiday that falls mid-week is the cheapest way to "buy" a long break — two days of leave can turn into nine days off.

This guide sets out Thailand's 2027 holiday calendar month by month, shows which stretches are long weekends without any leave, and works out how many days off each day of leave buys you — plus the catch that civil servants, banks and private companies do not close on identical days.

Dates come from the 2027 holiday calendar published by Time Out Bangkok and Bank of Thailand notice 37/2569 on financial-institution holidays (gazetted 25 August 2026) — information as of October 2026. We re-checked the weekday of every date against a calendar, but we did not see the full cabinet resolution for civil servants, so confirm with your own organisation's announcement before committing.

The 2027 calendar in one table

Weekdays are listed because the weekday decides whether a holiday can be "bridged".

That is 18 weekday holidays on the bank calendar (substitutes included). Civil servants count slightly differently: no Labour Day or its substitute, but an extra Royal Ploughing Ceremony day whose date is yet to be announced. Loy Krathong is not a public holiday.

The reason weekdays matter: 2027 has many holidays in the middle of the week (Songkran Tue-Thu, 28 July on a Wednesday, 13 October on a Wednesday), which is exactly the shape that bridges best.

The maths: mid-week holidays are the cheapest

A simple ratio: days off ÷ days of leave used. The higher, the better.

  • Holiday on Monday or Friday = 3 days free (0 leave)
  • Holiday on Tuesday or Thursday = 1 leave day (the Monday or Friday) for 4 days → 4x
  • Holiday on Wednesday = 2 leave days for 5 days, or 4 leave days for 9
  • Several mid-week holidays in a row (Songkran) = the best of all, since the holidays already join up and you only cap each end

Best value does not mean using every window. Annual leave is limited (the Labour Protection Act sets a minimum of 6 working days a year after one year of service, and many employers give more), so choose the windows that fit your real plans.

Window 1: New Year and Makha Bucha (Jan-Feb) — two free long weekends

1 January falls on a Friday, so 1-3 January is a free three-day weekend, and Makha Bucha on Sunday 21 February has its substitute on Monday 22 February, giving 20-22 February.

March has no holidays at all, and after February you wait until Chakri Day in early April. Nothing to bridge, but ordinary prices.

Window 2: Chakri Day + Songkran (April) — the best value of the year

April has two holiday blocks close together:

  • Chakri Day, Tuesday 6 April. Take Monday 5 → Saturday 3 to Tuesday 6 = 4 days (1 leave day)
  • Songkran, Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April. Take Monday 12 and Friday 16 → Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 = 9 days (2 leave days)
  • Both together. Add 7, 8, 9 April (Wed-Fri) between them → Saturday 3 to Sunday 18 April = 16 days for 6 days of leave (5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 16)
PlanLeave daysDays offDatesDays off per leave day
Songkran only2910-18 Apr4.5x
Chakri Day only143-6 Apr4x
Both blocks6163-18 Apr2.7x

The "both blocks" plan gives the longest break but a lower return per day, because the extra leave days (7, 8, 9) buy only one day off each. If you have few leave days, Songkran alone is the sweet spot.

Songkran travel: main roads north and north-east jam badly from the evening before the break. For planning and costs see driving to save fuel and the M6/M82 motorway toll-free guide.

Window 3: May-June — scattered holidays that bridge easily

  • Labour Day Sat 1 May + substitute Mon 3 May + Coronation Day Tue 4 May. If your workplace observes Labour Day (banks and most private firms) you get 4 days (1-4 May) with no leave. Civil servants do not observe Labour Day, so they take Monday 3 to get the same 4 days.
  • Visakha Bucha, Thursday 20 May. Take Friday 21 → 4 days (20-23 May)
  • Queen Suthida's Birthday, Thursday 3 June. Take Friday 4 → 4 days (3-6 June)

Three blocks costing 1-2 leave days in total for two 4-day breaks. It suits people who prefer several short trips to one long one. This is also early rainy season, and some destinations are cheaper than in the cool months.

Window 4: July-August — spend more leave, get more break

  • Asanha Bucha-Buddhist Lent, Sun 18 - Mon 19 July. 17-19 July is 3 days off. Per the published calendar there is no extra substitute; if the cabinet adds Tuesday 20 it would be a fourth day — wait for the announcement.
  • King's Birthday, Wednesday 28 July. Take Thu-Fri (29-30) → 28 July-1 Aug = 5 days (2 leave). Take Mon-Tue (26-27) as well → 24 July-1 August, 9 days (4 leave).
  • Mother's Day, Thursday 12 August. Take Friday 13 → 4 days (12-15 Aug)

Late July gives 9 days in a row without competing against the whole country the way Songkran does — good for a short trip abroad, though compare fares and room prices when you actually book.

Window 5: October — 2 leave days for 5, plus Chulalongkorn Day

  • 13 October (Wed). Take Thu-Fri (14-15) → 13-17 Oct = 5 days (2 leave)
  • Chulalongkorn Day Sat 23 Oct + substitute Mon 25 Oct → 3 days (0 leave)

The two blocks are a week apart, so they do not join, but October gets you two trips. It is the end of the rains and the start of the cool season — good for northern and nature trips before the winter crowds. See Thailand cool-season trips and, for this year, Loy Krathong.

Window 6: December — finish the year with 9 days

December is the kindest month of the year's end:

  • Father's Day Sun 5 Dec + substitute Mon 6 Dec → Sat 4 - Mon 6 = 3 days
  • Constitution Day Fri 10 Dec → Fri 10 - Sun 12 = 3 days
  • Take Tue-Wed-Thu (7, 8, 9) between them → Sat 4 - Sun 12 December = 9 days for just 3 days of leave
  • New Year's Eve Fri 31 Dec → 31 Dec-2 Jan, another 3 days (1 Jan 2028 is a Saturday — if a substitute Monday 3 Jan is declared it becomes 4 days, which awaits announcement)

Popular tourist destinations tend to sell out early at year-end, so book ahead.

A 13-day leave budget: Songkran + Chakri (6 days → 16) + late July (4 → 9) + early December (3 → 9) = 13 days of leave for 34 days off in three trips.

A 5-day budget: Songkran (2) + December (3) = 18 days off in two trips.

A 3-day budget: Songkran (2) + Visakha Bucha (1) = 13 days off in two trips.

Civil service, banks, private firms: not the same days

The mistake people make most often:

  • Banks and financial institutions follow the Bank of Thailand notice (37/2569 for 2027), including Labour Day and its substitute
  • Civil servants follow cabinet resolutions: a Royal Ploughing Ceremony day, no Labour Day
  • Private companies must give at least 13 traditional holidays a year including Labour Day, but choose which; it may differ from the civil service list
  • Schools follow their own term calendars

If your partner or children are on a different calendar, compare both before booking.

Common mistakes

  1. Booking non-refundable tickets before leave is approved. Many managers cannot approve everyone for Songkran. Pick changeable fares first.
  2. Not checking that your employer actually observes the holiday, especially Labour Day and the ploughing ceremony.
  3. Assuming the calendar is final. The cabinet has added special holidays in some years, and dates can shift. The published calendar is not the last word.
  4. Spending every leave day. Keep 2-3 spare days for illness and errands.
  5. Forgetting insurance. Going abroad on a long break? See travel insurance.

Tools to help

  • The latest holiday calendar and long weekends are on the holidays page (we will add 2027 once it is officially announced)
  • To count working days across a stretch of leave, use the working days calculator

Verdict

2027 is a kind calendar if you use it: many mid-week holidays mean 2-4 days of leave buys 9 days off three times (April, July, December). If leave is limited, prioritise Songkran (2 → 9), then December (3 → 9), then late July (4 → 9), then pick up the short 4-day breaks as your leave allows.

Before booking anything you cannot cancel, wait for the official holiday announcement and your manager's approval.

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays does Thailand have in 2027?
The published calendar has 18 traditional holidays that land Monday-Friday (substitute days included, and including the bank-only Labour Day substitute). Civil servants get a Royal Ploughing Ceremony day whose date is still to be announced but do not get Labour Day, so the count differs by employer type.
How do I get the longest Songkran break in 2027?
Songkran falls Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April. Taking Monday 12 and Friday 16 gives Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 — 9 days. Adding leave on 5, 7, 8 and 9 April (bridging to Chakri Day on Tuesday 6 April) gives 3-18 April, 16 days.
Do private companies have to follow the government holiday list?
Not exactly. Thailand's Labour Protection Act requires at least 13 traditional holidays a year (including National Labour Day), but the employer chooses which days. Your company's annual holiday announcement is what counts.
If a holiday falls on a weekend, do I get a substitute day?
Usually yes. In 2027 Makha Bucha is on Sunday 21 February, so Monday 22 February is the substitute. Details vary by employer type: Labour Day (a Saturday) has a bank substitute, but civil servants do not observe Labour Day.
When should I book flights for a long weekend?
For Songkran or New Year, as early as possible once your leave is certain — but pick a changeable or refundable fare until the official holiday announcement is out and your manager has approved the leave.
