Damp and mould aren't just unsightly — they affect health and damage walls and furniture. Here's how to tackle them from the root cause through to prevention.

Find the moisture source first

CauseHow to spot it
Poor ventilationStuffy room, musty smell, condensation on glass
Leaks/seepageWater stains on ceiling/walls, ring-shaped peeling
Ground moistureDamp along lower walls
Heavy bathroom/kitchen useSteam build-up, no extractor fan

Where mould loves to grow

Stuffy corners, behind cabinets/wall furniture, window edges, bathroom sealant, and ceilings under a leak.

Remove mould safely

  1. Wear a mask + gloves; open windows to ventilate
  2. Use a mould remover (or a cleaner labelled mould-killing) per the label
  3. Wipe/scrub the affected area, then dry it thoroughly
  4. If sealant/silicone has deep-set mould, strip it and re-seal

If mould covers a large area (e.g. a whole wall) or comes from a pipe leak in the wall, call a professional.

Prevent it long term

  • Ventilate: open windows, fit extractor fans in bathrooms/kitchens
  • Cut the water source: fix leaks, re-seal where water seeps in
  • Reduce humidity: use a dehumidifier/desiccant in stuffy rooms
  • Leave a gap behind cabinets so air can move

Verdict

Fixing damp & mould means find the moisture cause → remove mould safely → prevent with ventilation and leak repairs. Just wiping it off isn't enough — if the moisture stays, the mould returns.

Mould remover, sealant and dehumidifiers — compare prices across shops first.

Frequently asked questions

Is household mould dangerous?
Mould can trigger allergies and irritate the airways, especially in children and people with allergies/asthma. So fix the moisture source, not just wipe it off — and wear a mask and gloves while cleaning.
How do I stop damp coming back?
Focus on ventilation (open windows / extractor fans), reduce moisture sources, repair leaks, re-seal where water seeps, and use a dehumidifier in stuffy rooms to break the cycle.
