About this tool
Work out overtime pay at the rates set by the Thai Labour Protection Act, broken down line by line so you can see where each figure comes from — handy for checking a payslip, or for getting it right in the first place if you run payroll.
The statutory rates used here:
| Type | Rate |
|---|---|
| Overtime on a normal working day | 1.5× the hourly wage |
| Holiday work, normal hours (monthly-paid) | 1× extra |
| Holiday work, normal hours (daily-paid) | 2× |
| Overtime on a holiday | 3× |
The most common mistake is treating holiday work the same for everyone. A monthly salary already covers the holiday, so the law adds 1× extra for working it; a daily-rated employee who wouldn't have been paid that day gets 2×. Switching the wage basis in the tool swaps the rate automatically.
The hourly wage for monthly-paid staff is salary ÷ 30 days ÷ 8 hours, the convention the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare uses — so ฿30,000 a month is ฿125 an hour, and working-day overtime is ฿187.50 an hour.
The tool also warns when the hours you enter add up to more than 36 per week, the ministerial ceiling for overtime plus holiday work — worth knowing whether you're the employee or the one writing the roster.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the statutory overtime rates?
- Overtime on a normal working day is 1.5× the hourly wage. Working on a public holiday during normal hours pays 1× extra for monthly-paid staff and 2× for daily-paid staff. Overtime on a holiday is 3×.
- Why do monthly and daily staff get different holiday rates?
- A monthly salary already includes pay for the holiday, so the law adds 1× extra on top for working it. A daily-rated employee wasn't going to be paid that day at all, so they get 2×. This is the single most common source of miscalculation.
- How is the hourly wage derived from a salary?
- The convention used by the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare is salary ÷ 30 days ÷ 8 hours. A ฿30,000 salary is ฿125/hour, so working-day overtime is ฿187.50/hour.
- How much overtime is allowed per week?
- Overtime plus holiday work must not exceed 36 hours per week. Enter more than that and the tool warns you.
- Is everyone entitled to overtime?
- No. Employees with authority to hire, cut wages or dismiss (section 65) are not entitled to overtime pay, and ministerial regulations exclude some specific kinds of work.
