Sample / Dummy File Generator
Create and download sample files in any format — documents, images, audio, video and more — at the exact size you choose. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
A real, openable file; its size will be close to your target (compressed formats can't hit an exact byte count).
Generated in your browser — files are never uploaded to a server.
About this tool
Need a file of a specific type and size in a hurry? This sample (or "dummy") file generator creates one instantly, right in your browser. Choose from a wide range of formats across every category — documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, TXT, CSV, JSON, Markdown), images (PNG, JPG, WEBP, SVG, BMP), audio (WAV, MP3), video (MP4, WEBM) and other types (ZIP, XML, HTML and raw binary) — then set the exact size you want.
It is built for testing and development. Use it to check an upload form's size limit, see how your application handles a particular file type, measure download or transfer speed, fill a demo or staging environment with realistic data, or run quick QA and load tests without hunting for a real file of the right size.
A few things make it convenient and safe:
- You choose the size in bytes, kilobytes or megabytes. Most formats land on the exact byte count; PDF and the compressed images come out very close to your target.
- Real, valid files where it counts — the documents, archives and the WAV audio open normally in their apps. The MP3, MP4 and WEBM files are clearly marked as size/upload-test placeholders.
- 100% private — everything is generated on your own device. No file is ever uploaded, so it's safe to use anywhere.
It's free, needs no signup, and works on both mobile and desktop. Pick a type, set a size, and your test file is ready to download in seconds.
How to use
- 1Pick the file type you need from the list — documents, images, audio, video or other formats
- 2Enter the size you want and choose the unit (B, KB or MB)
- 3Press Generate & download — the file is built right in your browser
- 4The file downloads automatically, ready to use for your test
Frequently asked questions
- Is this tool free?
- Yes, completely free with no signup and no limits other than a sensible 50 MB cap to keep your browser responsive. Just open it and generate.
- Are the files created on a server?
- No. Every file is generated entirely in your browser using your device, so nothing is uploaded and nothing leaves your computer or phone.
- Will I get exactly the size I ask for?
- For most formats — text, CSV, JSON, XML, HTML, Markdown, SVG, BMP, WAV, ZIP, DOCX, XLSX and the media placeholders — you get the exact byte size. For PDF and the raster images (PNG, JPG, WEBP) the size is very close to your target, because compressed formats can't be forced to an exact byte count.
- Do the audio and video files actually play?
- The WAV file is a real, playable audio file. MP3, MP4 and WEBM are placeholders: they carry the correct extension, MIME type and exact size so they're perfect for testing uploads and size limits, but they aren't guaranteed to play in a media player.
- What would I use sample files for?
- Common uses include testing file-upload size limits, checking how an app handles different file types, measuring download or transfer speeds, filling a demo, and load or QA testing.
